Gas cylinders are large, heavy and relatively unstable due to the small base-diameter to height ratio. There are a few simple rules to follow to ensure on-site safety:
When not in use, store gas cylinders closed and in a secure, well-ventilated area, ideally in a designated cylinder cage with appropriate signage. |
Never store cylinders in an occupied building, unventilated rooms, underground rooms or in areas accessible to the general public. Ideally store on a level, well drained surface. |
Store and use cylinders in an upright position and provide a means of preventing cylinders from falling if accidentally bumped. |
Ensure full and empty cylinders are separated for easy identification. Segregate cylinders by the properties of the gas ensuring that LPG is separated from all cylinders by a minimum of 3 metres (or a firewall). |
