Hydrogen Fuelling for Cars

Road transport accounts for 29.1% of UK emissions*. Replacing petrol and diesel vehicles on the road with zero-emission hydrogen-powered vehicles can reduce UK greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.

Air Products is the leading supplier of hydrogen globally with decades of experience designing and implementing hydrogen fuelling systems.

Stations like the Heathrow Refuelling Station, in operation since 2012, are paving the way in tackling some of the great challenges of our age: climate change, pollution and energy security.

How does fuelling a hydrogen car work and is it safe?

Fuelling a hydrogen car is similar to fuelling a petrol- or diesel-powered automobile and takes about the same time.

How can hydrogen power a vehicle?

Hydrogen can power a vehicle using a fuel cell

In a hydrogen fuel cell, hydrogen atoms are separated into two primary components: one proton and one electron. The positively charged hydrogen protons pass through the fuel cell where they meet oxygen from the air on the other side. The electrons, however, head a different direction, creating an electric current which can power a fuel cell electric motor. The electrons then meet back up with the hydrogen ions and oxygen molecules from the air at the end of the process, creating water as the only emission..

Hydrogen can power a vehicle using an internal combustion engine (ICE)

Hydrogen combustion engines work in a similar way to petrol/ diesel engines. They ignite compressed hydrogen gas in the engine cylinders, which turns the engine and delivers power to the wheels. The issue with hydrogen is that it has different flame properties such as faster flame speed, hotter temperature, etc. so you cannot put directly into a standard ICE. Typically, engines are upgraded to modify the internal nozzles to account for hydrogen’s properties.

Heathrow Refuelling Station operating since 2012

Air Products is proud to be at the forefront of developing hydrogen infrastructure in the UK. Stations like the Heathrow Refuelling Station, in operation since 2012, are paving the way in tackling some of the great challenges of our age: climate change, pollution and energy security.

Air Products offers a fully integrated and customisable line of equipment for hydrogen fuelling. H2fM® hydrogen stations is proven technology which include compression, storage, and dispensing. The equipment is designed for minimal installation and can be used with any source of hydrogen. Cars, trucks, vans, buses, scooters, forklifts, locomotives, planes, cell towers, material handling equipment, and even submarines have been fuelled with trend-setting Air Products’ H2fM® technologies.

The LHR HRS regularly dispenses fuel to cars, trucks, buses and services both a local customer base and customers from the Northern Continent.
